Job-Centric Coding Meet Up

Howdy ya’ll!!

Since I have joined CSS, it seems that there are a fair number of us that are learning to code to be more marketable in job searches and/or enhance current standing. I would like to start a new meet up within CSS to address this niche.

What I am proposing…

  1. A one-hour meet up on Saturday starting at 1:00PM
  2. Meet up will focus on interview prep, job search, and industry insights
  3. Meet up structure: 15 min. Intro/Networking, 15 min. Topic Presentation, 30 min. Breakout to explore Topic

Does this interest you? At 50 ‘yes’ votes, a trial run is in order. If you are a ‘maybe’ vote, please feel free to provide your feedback in the comments below.

Huge thanks from CSS for sharing your opinion!!

  • Yes, I’m interested and would attend this session.
  • No, I’m satisfied with CSS as it is.
  • Maybe, I’m interested but would like to know more.

I think this is a great idea. I voted ‘no’ because I’m not really a member of the ‘job searching’ demographic, but I’d be happy to participate with mock interviews (I certainly need practice as an interviewer, and I imagine others do too!), or anything else.

I’d recommend lowering your expectation on group size-- the biggest challenge CSS has had with larger groups is space. 5-10 would be a great size for trialing a new format, and is certainly easier to find space for.

I’m interested, but I have a seasonal weekend volunteer job right now, so I won’t be free on the weekends until January.

I’d probably go too, but in an hour, things would have to be pretty streamlined. Most of the mock interview sessions I’ve gone to you can easily crank through an hour just doing 1 round of interview and feedback.

Also, you may end up with a revolving door, as people get jobs, they won’t come back, and be replaced by new people.

Perhaps something like this for interview days:
5 min explaining what’s going on/introduction
20 min interview
5 min feedback
20 min interview
5 min feedback
w/ 5 min leeway/switch time

Then
Do tech interviews 1st / 3rd Sats of month
Do behavioral interviews 2nd/ 4th Sats of month
Do some other subject material like you mentioned on the 5th Sats of the month with your time outline

Or some other combo, like

  1. Subject
  2. Technical
  3. Subject
  4. Behavioral
  5. Subject

or since 5th Saturdays occur about 1/2 the time during the year.

  1. Technical
  2. Subject
  3. Behaivioral
  4. Subject
  5. Technical

Just thinking out loud

Not sure how related this is to this idea, but I’d be curious about collaborating on figuring out what the industry demand is for certain skills. I kind of do it just ad hoc right now by noticing what’s in the the automated emails from job sites but have been wondering if there’s a better way to do it.
