Ah, that familiar sequence of tones modems used to make is playing out in my head now.

I found a video.

Also a video of kids encountering some “old-fashioned telephones”.

The modems I used were not quite that old. I think we had a Hayes 2400? baud modem. We didn’t have to transfer the phone handset. Nice looking modem.

I recently watched The Matrix with my kids (their first time), which of course includes some “classics” like phone booths (and many other land lines), some programs being passed around via disks, and monitors that took up the full depth of the desks they sat on.

Edit: An outstanding bonus of watching this movie is that now I can quote from it. My son is named Emerson, and when we tell him it’s time for bed or something like that, I can say, in my best Agent Smith voice: “Do you hear that, Mr. Emerson? That’s the sound of … inevitability.”

My favorite coding/hacking movie is still War Games.

We will have to try that sometime. I don’t think I’ve seen it since the 80s.

Dan you look like a friendlier, kinder version of Agent Smith

Haha, right! I have the right hairline for the part.
