I recently compiled a list of AI code review tools and posted on Slack, but I wanted to save a copy here too. If anyone has tried these or knows of others, leave a comment. I’ve only used GitHub Copilot for review so far, but I’m going to try some other ones.

I need to get back to saving things here too. Several times recently I’ve gone back to threads in this forum to find various resources I or other people have posted.

I need to go through that list, but I haven’t had time yet. This is an example of Copilot’s review bot. When you make a pull request on GitHub and ask the bot to review the code, it finds little problems that might otherwise be missed.

I used Antigravity (Gemini 3) to write a scraper, and then Copilot double-checks it. I also tried getting Codex (OpenAI) to check it locally. I just asked it to write up a report as a markdown file, and I posted Codex’s output in the pull request. Next, I’m going to see if Antigravity can pull down the PR comment back into the editor and fix the problems. I need to figure out how to automate the whole thing.

I just made a new #AI and Coding section and moved this topic there. I was an AI skeptic for a long time, but now I’m a believer.

Although I’m not using it for very much coding, I’m similarly changing my views on it and its usefulness to me. So far I’m mostly using it as a kind of research assistant which I can send out to collect and summarize information for me, especially for things I’m newly exploring. I’m sure I’m just scratching the surface of what it can do for me but it’s already a HUGE time saver for that much.

I now feel dumb for not thinking of it before, but only after you posted this did it occur to me I should be having AI review my code. I’m 100% self-taught and I’m the only one who ever sees my code, so it seems likely I have terrible habits that need correcting. In the past I’ve thought the only way to get guidance on what I need to change is to sign up for classes where my code gets graded by a human. But in trying to do that I realized that route would entail lots of other work that I’m not interested in spending my time on. So anyway, I’m glad you posted this. 🙂

If you haven’t already tried it, you can also ask for advice in the sidebar of AI editors while coding. I’m using it to quickly learn new things like [TanStack Start](https://tanstack.com/start/latest).

These are all forks of VS Code and they can import VS Code settings. The paid ones have free trials.

- [Antigravity](https://antigravityide.org/) — free at the moment.
- [Copilot](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/copilot/overview) — worth the $100/year
- [Windsurf](https://windsurf.com/refer?referral_code=7049171c0b) (the link should provide some free credits)
- [Cursor](https://cursor.com/)

In Copilot/vscode choose “Ask” to keep it from editing your code directly. It also allows you to send specific files into the chat with a question like, “Is there a better way to write this?”

Command line tools:

- [Gemini CLI](https://geminicli.com/)
- [OpenAI Codex](https://openai.com/codex/)

I haven’t completely figured those ones out yet, but you can ask them to analyze code and write a report that is saved to a markdown file.

Latest updates:

I’ve been experimenting with Gemini CLI and Codex more. The LLMs come up with different answers so I often have them cross-check things.

If you haven’t tried Gemini CLI or Codex yet, open one of them in a repo and type `/init`. Then ask something like “can you give me ideas what I should do next with this project?” or “Can you give me some ideas about how to improve the code?”

Gemini and Antigravity very aggressively try to write code when I ask questions. At the moment I’m trying to design a system and understand how it works, so I’ve been using [Windsurf](https://windsurf.com/refer?referral_code=7049171c0b). For me it has been the most useful editor for analyzing code or learning new things, because it uses AI to create the hover tips, and from there you can click a button to have it write a tutorial about that section of the code.

(That’s a referral link that should provide some extra credits.)

I’ve been combining the AI coding with [Superwhisper](https://superwhisper.com/) so I can just talk to my computer and tell the agents what to do.

I haven’t used Cursor or Claude Code much yet.
